Nicholas Koob one of the most widely known and most highly respected citizens of Caledonia, died at his home in this city yesterday at 1:30 o'clock after a lingering illness, having been confined to the house for about a year and a half.
Mr. Koob was born at Moestroff, County Diekrich, Germany
October 31,1836; came to this country and settled in Iowa in the early 50's attended a college in Stearns Country, Minn, for some time; taught school at St. Cloud Minn, and Tedemore, Iowa and later went into business at Tedemore, which he conducted for about two years. On February 26,1862 he was married to Miss Katherine Burg at St. Donatus, Iowa. They came to Caledonia in 1866 when he started the mercantile business here and which business he continued until 1896, when he retired. In 1878 he built his three-story stone block, known as the Koob House, one of the finest structures in the city, where in he for thirty-two years conducted a very successful business as a general merchant and which still stands as a fit and imposing monument of the industry, thrift and progressive of its owner. He was a village treasurer of Caledonia for twenty-five consecutive years. He was a respective German-American citizen, one of the pillars of the St. Peter's German Catholic church and a man highly esteemed and respected by all.
His wife, with who he had thirteen children, ten of whom are living, died Feb 8,1887. The ten children who survived him are: Mrs. N. F. Kranz, Evanston, Ill, Frank, Ellendale, N.D. Andrew, Owatonna, MN Eva, Caledonia, Michael, St. Paul, Charles, Winona, Mrs J. Treff, Evanston,Ill, Mrs. John Schieber, Sueston N.D., Peter, Sioux Falls, S.D., and Mary at home.
The time for the funeral has not yet been determined, but will probably be next Friday afternoon. A true man, a good citizen . He died December 17,1907
