He was born Jannes van der Woude (= Of the Forest) in March 1855 in the country village of Thesinge, municipality Ten Boer, located in the central part of the Dutch northeastern province Groningen, son of Klaas Jannes van der Woude and Geessien Hindriks de Vries.

On 15 May 1882 servant Jannes van der Woude married in Ten Boer at the age of 27 years to the seven years younger servant maid Pieterke Vredevoogd, who was born in Thesinge too.

In 1909 the family Van der Woude emigrated to the USA.

In 1910 John (55 years old) and his wife Priscilla (48) lived with their children Jennie (8), Henry (11) and Claus Vanderwoude (5) in Manhattan, Gallatin County, located in the southwestern part of Montana.

In 1920 John (65) and his wife Picterke (58) lived with their children Clara (27), Jennie (17), Henry (20) and Clarence (14) in Gallatin County, Montana too.
