US Congressman. Born in Dresden, Germany, while his parents were visiting Europe, he was the son of Civil War Union Major General George B. McClellan. His grandfather, Dr. George McClellan, was a prominent Philadelphia anatomist and surgeon. He graduated from the College of New Jersey in 1886, became a newspaper reporter, for the New York Morning Journal, then began his political career with his appointment as treasurer of the New York and Brooklyn, in 1889. He attended the New York Law School, was admitted to the bar in 1892, commenced to law practice in New York City and served as President of the New York City board of aldermen (1893-94). In 1895, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-fourth Congress and to the next four succeeding Congresses, serving until 1903. He resigned his seat in Congress having been elected Mayor of New York City, serving (1903-10) and after his term, he was elected professor of economic history at Princeton University. During World War I, he served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army Ordnance Department, (1917-19). After the war he resumed his position at Princeton University and resided in Washington, D.C., until his death at age 75.
