Hugh E. Rose, 85

Died Jan. 21, 2010

Hugh E. Rose, age 85, of Stillwater, Minn., died in the early hours on Jan. 21, 2010, surrounded by his family.

Hugh was born in Hudson, Wis., on April 20, 1924, to Frederick and Florence (Gilmore) Rose. He grew up in the Hudson area where he attended school and became a well known part of the community. After school, Hugh joined the military. He proudly served in the Army for 4 years where he was an artilleryman. This included time spent in the Philippines during WWII. When Hugh completed his military obligation, he returned home to the St. Croix River Valley where he began work at Andersen Corporation. It was during this time that he also met Lorna Moris. The two fell in love, and on Jan. 31, 1948, they were married at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in St. Paul, Minn. This marriage would be blessed with four children. Hugh and his family settled in Stillwater and he continued to work for Andersens. He would work there faithfully for 34 years, until his retirement in 1986. In 1999, Lorna passed away. Hugh would continue to live in Stillwater, close to his two daughters and his grandchildren.

Hugh left an impression and a smile wherever he went. He was a good friend to many. Growing up, he played sports and excelled in baseball and skiing - even participating in ski jumping. Later on in life, he played in many fastpitch softball leagues as a pitcher. When he wasn't playing sports himself, he cheered on the Minnesota Vikings and Twins alongside his family. Hugh loved the outdoors where he spent time camping, and enjoyed time at the family cabin, deer hunting and fishing. He enjoyed fishing trips with his wife, and together the two ventured into Alaska and Canada on multiple occasions. Always young at heart, Hugh also enjoyed white water rafting and participated in this into his 80s.

Above all else, he enjoyed spending time with his family. With his granddaughters, he built tree houses and had tea parties. He and his wife Lorna would travel and winter in Florida. He would even help daughter Terri with kids she would babysit, becoming "grampa Hugh" to his "adopted grandkids." Relaxing at home was always the best with his family around him. He would enjoy visits from friends and family, reading the paper, and watching the local sports on TV.

Hugh is survived by many friends and family members. This includes his daughters, Terri (Brett) Rose-Tucker and Dawn Rose; granddaughters, Kelli amd Ashli Tucker; sisters, Bonnie Kohrt and Joyce Smith; and brothers, John Sr, Gerald (Kathy), and Daniel (Pat) Rose. He is further survived many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Hugh was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Florence Rose; wife, Lorna; infant daughters, Theresa Ann, Ann Marie and Pamela Jean; brothers, Fritz and Richard; and sisters, Betty and Rosie.

Services for Hugh were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 25, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Hudson. Father Dan Dahlberg officiated. Burial took place afterwards at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation for Hugh took place from 3-6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 24, at the O'Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson. The evening concluded with a prayer service at 6 p.m. Visitation also took place for 1 hour prior to services on Monday at the church.
