TOOGOOD
- On October 19 1939, at a private hospital, Palmerston North, Richard Ernest, dearly beloved husband of Janette Toogood, of 20 Mere Mere Avenue, Palmerston North; aged 80 years.
OBITUARY Mr R. E. TOOGOOD
Much regret will be felt by a wide circle of friends at the news of the death of Mr Richard Ernest Toogood, of Mere mere Avenue, which occurred in a private hospital last evening. Mr Toogood, who had shown characteristic patience in his illness, had been laid aside for several weeks. His death brings to a close a residence of 77 years in the Dominion and a life well spent as one of the fast diminishing band of pioneers.
Born in Hobart, Tasmania 80 years ago, the late Mr Toogood was a son of the late Mr and Mrs W. Toogood, formerly of England. He was a child of three when his parents came to New Zealand at the time of the Gabriel's Gully gold rush, the family settling in Milton, Otago. Richard Toogood received his education in that centre and on leaving school took up the trade of cabinetmaking. In the early 'eighties he married Elizabeth Sandford, of Milton, shortly after joining the railway service at Kaitangata and being stationed in various centres in the Dominion, including Oamaru, Waipukurau and Woodville, where they resided for 12 years before his retirement 20 years ago.
Mr Toogood spent his retirement in Palmerston North keeping up his active interest in bowling, as a member of the Terrace End and Northern Clubs. He was a prominent Freemason of long standing, having been a very early member and Worshipful Master of Lodge Ruahine, Woodville, No.171, he had been its chaplain for many years and had held the high office of Grand Sword Bearer in the Grand Lodge of New Zealand. He also had been a member of the Benevolent Fund of the Grand Lodge. He was also an Oddfellow and in his day a keen angler. His first wife predeceased him in 1922 and some years later he married Mrs Thessman, of Palmerston North. Of a kindly nature, Mr Toogood had a host of friends who will miss him very much.
In addition to his widow there are left to mourn their loss one daughter, Mrs H. McKenzie of Grey Street, Palmerston North and one son Mr W. H. Toogood of Hopelands, another son having died as a baby; there survive also nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. There are two brothers, Mr W. H. Toogood of Invercargill and Mr J. A. Toogood, late of Masterton and now of Feilding. Mr Harry Toogood, another brother, passed away at Masterton just three weeks ago.
