Thor Fosheim, who lost his life on Monday, Jan 21, when he became lost in a blizzard while looking for his cattle on his place in the Moenville community in Haakon County, SD was born at Breim, Norway on Sep. 22, 1876. At the time of his death he had reached the age of 76 years, 3 months and 21 days.
He was baptized in infancy and confirmed in the Norwegian Luther Church. He was the youngest of the family and the only boy. His eight sisters Tora Fosseheim Myklebust Andrine Fossheim Reed preceded him in death.
He stayed at home until he was confirmed when he took up cobbling. After he was through with his apprenticeship he became a shoemaker. At that time shoemakers, tailors and seamstresses went from place to place making what the people needed.
On May 15, 1901 he was united in marriage to Gjertina Gabrialson Fosheim, who was s seamstress and traveled from place to place with him.
Mr. Fosheim came to America in 1905 with his wife and two small children, Peter and Esther. They settled in Bristol, SD where they lived for two years before moving to Moenville, SD where his remaining years were spent.
Mr. Fosheim was one of the few remaining homesteaders in the area where he engaged in ranching and farming. He saw the country grow, prosper and suffer reverses and rally again.
In 1930 he made his first trip back to Norway, in 1937 both Mr. Fosheim and his wife went back to visit their homeland and since then he made two more trips back in 1946 and 1950.
Mr. Fosheim is survived by one son and eight daughters, his wife having preceded him in death in 1943. Surviving members of the family are; Peter, Mrs. Esther Schanzenbach, Minnie, Mrs. Anna Walker of Bryant, Mrs. Olga Meyers, Mrs. Ida Hunt, Mrs. Thilda Mulcahy, Mrs. Emma Root and Mrs. Clara Roseth. Also 38 grandchildren, several great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews in Norway.
Funeral services were held at the Deep Creek Church on Tuesday, Jan. 29 with Dotson Funeral Home of Pierre in charge. The quartet from Midland, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Noble and Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Pegelow sang the hymns, "What A Friend We Have in Jesus" and "Jesus is Calling." A junior choir from Midland with seven of the nine boys grandsons of the deceased, sang the hymn, "The Old Rugged Cross". Pastor Walla officiated at the service and sang a solo in the Norwegian language. Burial was made in the Deep Creek Cemetery with Pete and Arthur Sandal, Melvin and Paul Sandbo and William and Emery Markwed acting as pallbearers.
All the children were present for the services. Mr. and Mrs. Walker were the only ones coming from a distance.
Mr. Fosheim will not only be missed in his home and family gatherings but in the community and church. To his family sincere sympathy of the community is extended.
