William F. McDill, 87, died at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010, at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Lafayette, Indiana.

He was born Sept. 25, 1922 in Lafayette, Indiana, to the late Miles E. and Grace E. Miller McDill. On March 20, 1948, he married Helen Louise Davis in Lafayette. She preceded him in death on March 8, 1985.

Surviving are two daughters, Sandra K. Fountain (husband: Steven) and Sharon A. Gantz (husband: Pete), both of Lafayette; a son, William M. McDill (wife: Theresa) of Dayton; a brother, Robert N. McDill (wife: Mary) of Lafayette; a sister, Pat L. Sense (husband: Dave) of Lafayette; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He made the landing on D-Day on Omaha Beach and was awarded the Purple Heart. He also earned a Bronze Star for his service in the European Theater in the 16th Regiment, 1st Division, and a Silver Star for the Battle of the Bulge.
