DUFF, ASPINWALL PASTOR, CALLED BY DEATH – Well Known United Presbyterian Minister Dies in Hospital After Operation - SERVED LONG IN WEST - The REV. DR. JOHN A. DUFF, one of the best known United Presbyterian churchmen in the United States and for the last 18 years pastor of the Aspinwall United Presbyterian Church, died at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon in Columbia Hospital of pneumonia. Dr. Duff went to the hospital two weeks ago and underwent an operation which superinduced pneumonia. Dr. Duff was born in Penn Township, near Wilkinsburg, February 5, 1858. He received his early education in the Pittsburgh public schools and Sewickley Academy. Later he entered Westminster College, from which he was graduated in 1881. A short time later he answered a call to Munden, Neb., where he began his career in the pulpit. He later was sent to Greely, Col., where he served as pastor of the United Presbyterian Church for one year. His next pastorate was in Chicago, where he remained 10 years. From Chicago he went to the Aspinwall church. Dr. Duff received the honorary degree of Bachelor of Divinity from Grove City College, the degree of Bachelor of Arts from Westminster College, and the degree of Doctor of Divinity at the Pittsburgh Seminary. He was recording secretary of the Board of Freedman's Missions, financial agent of the Allegheny Presbytery and an active worker in the New World Movement of his church. On August 20, 1885, Dr. Duff was married to MISS FANNIE LEWIS of New Wilmington, Pa. Besides his widow he leaves two sons, JOHN M., and PAUL M. DUFF; one daughter, MISS HELEN C. DUFF; two sisters, MISS NELLIE DUFF and MRS. DAVID BARCLAY; two brothers, ROBERT and CHARLES DUFF, and one grandson. (Note: A photograph of Rev. Duff was published with this obituary.)
