Rob was a farmer and early letter carrier. He was an elder in his Presbyterian church, as well as a Mason. As a deacon in his church, he used to tell the other pioneers that God helps those who help themselves.

He m. Flora Reynolds 6 June 1875 in Maquoketa, Jackson Co., IA. After Flora passed away, Rob m. secondly the widow Lulu J. (Iles) Howe.
