Charles Andrew McHendry was born July 29, 1887 in Vermont, Illinois to William Jackson and Harriet Emma Hamer McHendry. He spent the early part of his life in Illinois, coming to Iowa in the spring of 1918.

Charles married Alta Lavelle Hainline on August 29, 1908 in Blandinsville, Illinois. They had five children, Garnet, Gladys, Gerald, Gracia and Max.

Charles was engaged in farming and construction work until joining the John Deere Ottumwa Works where he was employed for fifteen years. He retired in 1954.

One of Charles' hobbies was woodworking.

Charles was a member of the Agency, Iowa Methodist Church.

He died February 24, 1970 in Agency, Iowa, from a stroke suffered five years earlier.
