Nelson was the son of Nathan William and Matilda Bloyed Caughman. He was one of ten children born to this couple, five girls, and five boys. He was a private for the Union in the 1st Arkansas Cavalry Regiment, Company A. He was killed in action on the Prairie Grove Battlefield and buried there. He was taken by horse drawn carriage to be buried in the Fayetteville National Cemetery when the cemetery opened in 1867.
