Lifelong Staten Islander Lawrence (Larry) P. Barisciano, 59, of Westerleigh, who is remembered for his devotion to his family, died yesterday at home, of cancer.

Born in St. George, he graduated from St. Peter's Elementary School and St. Peter's Boys High School, and attended the former Staten Island Community College.

Mr. Barisciano moved to Stapleton in 1973 upon his marriage to Rosanne Clancy. The couple settled in Westerleigh in 1999.

Always a hard worker, his first job was at Dembner's Hardware Store in Tompkinsville, while he was in high school.

In 1972, he joined the staff of Kmart in New Springville as manager of the toy department. Under his management, the store became one of the $1 million stores in the chain for two consecutive years.

After leaving Kmart in 1977, Mr. Barisciano began his 30-year career at St. Peter's Cemetery, West Brighton, as a backhoe operator. He was promoted to superintendent in 2005 and retired in 2007.

In 2008, he took a position as custodian at St. Margaret-Mary's R.C. Church in Midland Beach. He retired shortly before his death.

Mr. Barisciano served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1970 until his honorable discharge in 1976.

An avid bowler, he counted the former Columbian Lyceum in West Brighton as his house and league of choice. He bowled there for 25 years and was a member of the Sunday morning men's league.

When his son, Lawrence Jr., became a junior bowler, Mr. Barisciano became a certified coach instructor for the Young American Bowlers Association, and spent many weekends taking his son to bowling tournaments around the five boroughs.

He also was a New York Yankees and NASCAR fan, and collected coins and baseball cards.

Mostly, he was happiest in the company of his family, always putting their needs before his own, they said. He maintained a close relationship with his father-in-law, Tex Clancy.

"Most of his friends would describe him as an honorable, respectful, good guy," his wife, Rosanne, said.

Surviving, along with his wife of 36 years, and his son, are his brother, Philip; his half-brother, Alfred Block, and his half-sister, MaryLou Episcopio.

The funeral will be Monday, February 8, 2010 from the Harmon Home for Funerals, West Brighton, with a mass at 10 a.m. in St. Peter's R.C. Church, New Brighton. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery.
