Civil War Union Brigadier General, US Congressman. He was admitted to the bar in 1844, commenced law practice in Brooklyn, New York, served in the State Assembly in 1855 and the State Senate, 1858 to 1861. When the Civil War erupted, he joined the New York Regiment and was commissioned Brigadier General in October, 1862. He commanded the Second Division, 3rd Army Corps in the Battles of Gettysburg, Wapping Heights and was honorably discharged from the service in August 1865. After the war, he engaged in banking and in 1887, was the first Italian American to be elected as a Democrat to the Fiftieth, Fifty-first and Fifty-second Congresses, serving until his death.
