Jefferson John Meek was my 3rd great grandfather. He was a Southerner by birth and in ideology of southern planters of the era. It's hard to know whether he would have preferred his Reverend or Captain title for this memorial, so I am not making the choice for him.
A photo album created by J J Meek's granddaughter, Maxie Leah Meek Williams, when she received it as an engagement gift for Christmas, 1885, contained tintype photos of most of J J Meek's family. Based upon dress and what I know of the composition of the family at the time the photos were taken, I believe the 7 photos were taken around 1861, before J J Meek, and his son, James Alexander (Maxie's father), decided to form their own CSA unit at Panola Co., MS on 27 Mar 1862. J J Meek was 52 years old. He resigned 24 Aug 1863, and was replaced by R M Buchanan.
J J Meek considered the Civil War "our holy cause." By the time of his resignation as Captain of his unit in 1863, I think he had figured out just how much that cause was costing him. I've written about my 3g-grandfather in a post on my genealogy blog, here.
