Lawyer, judge and politician in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. He joined the Nova Scotia bar in 1785 and set up practice in Halifax. He was named deputy judge advocate general for British North America in 1799 and later became civil secretary to George Prevost. In 1825, he was sent to Newfoundland as colonial secretary under Thomas John Cochrane. The following year, he was named assistant judge in the Supreme Court.
