He was the paternal grandson of Samuel Barwis and Rachel Lundy, of Bucks County, the former of English and the latter of Scotch origin. His maternal grandfather owned a mill at Bristol, PA, and during the Revolutionary War, being a Quaker and loyalist, and he furnished the British with flour. In consequence, he had his property confiscated by the United States government. Alfred's paternal and maternal ancestors were among the early settlers of Bucks County, and the family had several generations of tailors.
Alfred, along with his older brothers, all apprenticed under their father to become master tailors. Morrisville being just across the Delaware River from Trenton, NJ, the family later relocted there where father and sons were in business. Alfred later becoming a Merchant in the capital city.
In 1886, the 38-year old married 28-year old Susan R. Hoagland, youngest daughter of Tunis Van Doren Hoagland of New Brunswick, one-time Keeper of Trenton State Prison and Mayor of New Brunswick. No doubt through his father-in-law's political connections, Alfred became Collector of the Port of Burlington, and later a Deputy at the State Prison.
The couple resided many years in Trenton and were parents to 4 known children:
* Horace E. Barwis (1887-1963)
* Mary Molly Barwis DAVISON(1889-1956)
* Dorothy W. Barwis PITMAN (1891-1968)
* Robert Elmer Barwis (1900-1974).
Alfred was widowed when his wife of 34 years passed in 1920 at age 62. She was buried with family members at Willow Grove, where Alfred joined her 3 years later on December 3, 1923, at age 75.
