W. M. SPALDING DIES AT 66
William Marion Spalding Jr., 66, retired Lebanon businessman and former city clerk, died early Monday, June 13, at St. Thomas Hospital, Nashville, having suffered a heart attack after undergoing surgery. He had been at the hospital since June 8. He was a Marion County native, son of the late County Judge William M. Spalding and Sarah Victoria Mattingly Spalding. He had served as a representative of the Beatrice Foods Company for 24 years, was employed with the S. H. Grinstead Company here, and last was employed as State auditor in the Sales Tax Division of the Kentucky Revenue Department. He was a lifelong member of St. Augustine Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary Acquin Mattingly Spalding; five daughters, Mrs. Joseph H. Battcher, Miss Florence Spalding and Mrs. George H. Abell, all of Louisville; Mrs. Claude C. Schneider, St. Louis, and Sister Mary Acquin, Lexington; four sons, the Rev. William A. Spalding, pastor of St. Francis of Assisi Church; Albert D. Spalding, Grand Rapids, Mich.; Joseph M. Spalding and Dr. James A. Spalding, both of Louisville. Three sisters, Mrs. J. D. Hardesty, Seymour, Ind.; Miss Kate Spalding, Louisville, and Mrs. W. C. Madden, Lebanon. Also survive; one brother, Robert L. Spalding, Lebanon banker and former mayor, and 25 grandchildren. The body was at Bosley Funeral Home. Funeral services were conducted at 10:30 a.m. last Wednesday at St. Augustine, with his son, the Rev. William A. Spalding, as celebrant of the Mass. Pallbearers were Maurice, Hugh and Wallace Spalding, J. D. Hardesty, Damian Abell and J. E. Abell, Jr. Burial was in the church cemetery.
