Squire J. Tom Smith, one of the best known citizens of the western part of the county, died at his home near Chicago Tuesday evening at 10 o'clock of heart trouble. Although a sufferer from asthma for many years he seemed to be in his usual health until Monday when he suffered a heart attack. Everything possible was done for him but he gradually grew worse until he died. Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Father Werner, were held at the Catholic church at Chicago yesterday morning and burial was in the church cemetery. Mr. Smith was 70 years old and was born, rearer and spent the whole of his life in this county. For many years he was engaged in farming and for quite a number of years past had also been in the mercantile business at Chicago. He served many terms as Magistrate of the Chicago precinct, discharging the duties of the position in a manner that won for him the warmest praise. He was a fine citizen and the news of his death will be received with sincere sorrow by everyone who knew him. He is survived by his wife and four daughters and two sons, as follows: Mrs. Arthur Cambron and Misses Lizzie, Ella and Addie Smith and Hugh and Clint Smith, all of this county.
