Obituary. Mrs W. G. Sandling The death occurred on Friday, April 6, of a respected resident of Woodville in the person of Mrs W. G. Sandling, at the age of 62 years. The deceased lady, who left New Zealand only a short time ago on a trip to the Old Country, arrived in England on Easter Monday.
With her husband, who passed away in April last year, she was a well-known and respected resident of the district, having resided in the town for the past thirty years.
Deceased was born in England, being the daughter of the foreman-mason at the construction of the Forth bridge in Scotland. She then spent a number of years with her grandparents in Gloucestershire, where she first met Mr Sandling. About 20 years ago, the late Mrs Sandling came to New Zealand, arriving in Palmerston North in 1907. A few months later, in April, her marriage to Mr Sandling took place, the couple coming on to Woodville, where Mr Sandling worked at his trade of blacksmithing for the late Mr G. P. Smith, but on account of ill-health he was forced to give up his work.
It was then that he built the boardinghouse opposite the Woodville railway station which, with the assistance of Mrs Sandling, he ran successfully for about five years. After selling out his business he took over a farm which he converted from a veritable swamp to one of the most profitable farms in the district.
Up to the time of her departure from New Zealand, the late Mrs Sandling lived in retirement in McLean Street.
