Brown Funeral Tomorrow
Bank President Was Well Known in Business Circles
Funeral services for S. Thomas Brown, who died of old age early yesterday morning at his home at 2903 P Street Northwest in his eighty-fifth year will be conducted tomorrow afternoon at 4 o'clock from his late home, the Rev. James T. Marshall, pastor of West Street Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. The death of Mr. Brown removes from the banking circles of this city one of its best known men, the deceased having been President of the Farmers and Mechanics National Bank of Georgetown for the past seventeen years. Born near Clarksburg, Montgomery County, Maryland, February 24, 1828 he came to Georgetown when 14 years old and had made his home there since. Beginning as a clerk in one of the pioneer dry goods stores of Georgetown, Mr. Brown, by exceptional ability and strict attention to duty was enabled when a comparatively young man to engage in the dry goods business for himself. He opened his store in Georgetown and continued in that business there until seventeen years ago, when he became President of the Farmers and Mechanics National Bank. He was until about a year ago actively identified with the business interests of his section of the city having been at one time President of the Arlington Fire Insurance Company. He was a member of the Association of Oldest Inhabitants of the District, but belonged to no other organization. For the last year he had been in poor health, gradually becoming more feeble. He is survived by four daughters and one son all of this city. They are Mrs. William B. Hester, 1612 I Street Northwest and the Misses Virginia, Ada and Blanche, all at home and William T. Brown.
