Grant Dutton, 93, lifelong resident of Macon County, MO, passed away March 1, 2005, at the Loch Haven Nursing Home in Macon, MO. He resided at 505 Kohl Street for 42 years before going to Loch Haven.
Grant was born March 31, 1911, in Cherry Box, MO, the seventh child of Charles Henry and Ida Josephine McConaughy Dutton.
He served in the United States Army from May of 1942 until September of 1945 in the 87th Infantry Division as a Sergeant in the North African Campaign and then in the invasion of Italy during World War II. While heroically serving his country he was awarded three bronze stars, the combat patch and good conduct medal.
He was united in marriage to Lucille Fletcher Noll on December 8, 1941 in St. Charles, MO, who preceded him in death.
He was a self-employed skilled painter in Macon for 55 years and painted many of the places in Macon and the surrounding area.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 29 and only last week received a certificate commemorating his 60th year membership. Grant was an active member of the Masonic Lodge #172 AM & FM and during his 50 plus years membership he held various posts in the organization and was often looked to for leadership. He committed the Masonic ritual to memory and always enjoyed teaching it to new members. He took great pride in reciting the Masonic Prayers for his Brother Masons' funerals. He was also a Past Master of the Callao Masonic Lodge #38.
He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by a daughter, Barbara Noll Chasteen Campbell and her husband, Larry of Memphis, MO; two granddaughters, Mary Ann McClamroch and her husband, Lynn of Kirksville, MO, Karen Jo Ellersieck and her husband, Mark of Columbia, MO, and one grandson, David Noll Chasteen and his wife, Emily of Manhattan, KS; one niece, Laverne Marlin of Moberly, MO; four great-grandchildren; and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, five brothers, and three sisters.
Funeral services were held March 5, 2005, at the Greening-Eagan-Hayes Funeral Home in Macon, MO, with Rev. David Israel officiating. Burial, with full military honors, was in the Locust Grove Cemetery in Callao, MO. A Masonic Service was held March 4, 2005 at Greening-Eagan-Hayes Funeral Home. The family suggests memorials to the Masonic Lodge or the Locust Grove Cemetery, which may be left at the funeral home.
