United States Navy Rear-Admiral. He led the combined Naval and Marine squadron the occupied Monterrey and Yerba Buena (now San Francisco) during the Mexican War, thus seizing California for the United States. Later came into conflict with John C. Fremont about holding Yerba Buena, which led to his replacement in California by Commodore Robert Stockton.
