MONDAY RITES HONOR TRUCK MISHAP VICTIM

Funeral services for William A. (Bill) Winward, 48, of 275 East 5th South, Vernal, were held Monday at 11 a.m. in Vernal 2nd-4th Ward Chapel.

Mr. Winward was killed, apparently instantly, in a truck accident Friday about 8:30 a.m. in Vernal on State Highway 44.

He was driving an Intermountain Concrete Co. Truck when apparently he missed a gear in down shifting or had brake failure, according to investigating officers.

The truck ran off the road to the left at the beginning of an old approach road and then hit a steep embankment and was airborne for 50 feet. The truck then continued on through the pine trees for another 400 feet and overturned, pinning the driver inside.

A tow truck pulled the cab apart to free Mr. Winward which took about an hour. He was taken by ambulance to the mortuary.

The truck was totally demolished with a property loss of about $9500.

Trooper Ronald Wilson of Utah Highway Patrol investigated, assisted by Sgt. Howard D. Powell.

Bishop Clyde R. Anderson conducted the services. Loran Reynolds offered the prayer at the mortuary. Eleanor Marshall played the prelude and postlude music and accompanied all of the special music.

A quartet comprised of Lois Erickson, Marva Lent, Ralph Walker and Chad Orton sang "Oh My Father." Glen Lee offered the opening prayer. Bishop Anderson gave remarks.

Lloyd Winward was first speaker. A trio consisting of Elizabeth Sowards, Pat Stewart and Roberta Ufford sang, "Beyond the Sunset" narrated by Evyln Richardson. Rondo Sullivan was the second speaker.

Marva Lent and Lois Erickson sang "I'll Walk With God" for the closing song. Clair Southam offered the opening prayer.

Grant Southam dedicated the grave. Pallbearers were Ed Jensen, Virl Thompson, Porter Phillips, Harvey Gaster, Don Richens and Orvel Ashpaugh. Honorary pallbearers were the Elders Quorum.

Burial was in the Vernal Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors.

Out-of-town guests here to attend the funeral Mr. and Mrs. Everett Barney, Mr. and Mrs. Al Roberts, Mr. and Mrs. Dailey Van Tassell, Mr. and Mrs. Larry Van Tassell, all of Salt Lake City and Mrs. Martha Hair and daughter of Idaho.

Mr. Winward was born February 12, 1918 in Vernal to Joseph H. and Lizza Clark Winward. He married Belva Herbert June 13, 1942 in Ft. Lewis, Washington.

He was a veteran of World War II, a construction worker and a member of the LDS Church. He was a former Vernal City employee.

Survivors include his widow, three daughters, Narvene, Elray Jo and Denice, all of Vernal; three brothers and a sister, Kenneth of Salt Lake City; Mrs. Ray (Thelma) Campbell; Harold and Carl J. all of Covina, California.
