According to the local newspaper:

Samuel A. Cates was shot three times and murdered at Jean on 23 December 1915. Emmett Willis and Everitt Buchanan surrendered to the Young County Sheriff shortly after the shooting. Willis and Buchanan were brought to Graham and placed in the county jail. They remained in jail until the next evening when they were released on $1,000 bonds. The murder of Samuel Cates occurred after a box supper held by the ladies of the Jean Methodist Church.

Samuel Cates left his wife and several grown children to mourn his death. Emmett Willis and Everitt Buchanan were both young men. The Young County District Attorney brought the case before the Young County Grand Jury, but the Jury did not find enough evidence to indict either young man.

There was idle talk in Jean and Graham as to why the Grand Jury refused to indict these two men.
