Obituary:
John McCan Auten, son of Aaron and Elizabeth Jane Auten, was born in Milan township Nov. 23, 1849 and departed his life Sept. 11, 1920. He was married to Elizabeth Jane Martin Aug. 15, 1875 who preceded him in death Nov. 18, 1918. There were born to this union seven children, six of whom sincerely mourn his loss, Mrs. N. J. Laskey, Clayton M. Auten, Stanley N. Auten, Willard M. Auten of this place, also Mrs. F. J. Rapps of Durand, Mich., Mrs. T. E. Rainer of Covington Ind., Gertrude having been called in 1893 at the early age of 16 years. He also leaves 12 grand children, four great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends. The deceased was a life long resident of this locality and a member of Dundee No. 74 F. and A. M., B. P. O. E. of Ann Arbor and Sir Knights of this place. The funeral was conducted by Rev. T. B. Leith assisted by Rev. A. Balgooyen. Burial services were conducted by B. P. O. E. of Ann Arbor. Burial took place at Rice Cemetery.

“Killed In Auto Accident” is headline on front page of Milan Leader, Sept. 16, 1920, at Milan Public Library. Article says: J. M. Auten, prominent business man and retired farmer of Milan, was accidentally killed Saturday night on the road between Milan and Dundee. Just how the accident occurred no one seems to know. Mr. Auten was the only occupant of the ill-fated car. Mr. Auten was returning from Dundee Saturday night and from indications he must have lost control of the automobile. The car skidded across the slippery pavement and overturned in the ditch along the side of the road, pinning the occupant under the side of the car. The chest was crushed and Mr. Auten died before relief could be brought. Mr. Auten was prominent in business circles in Milan, being a stock holder in the Milan State Savings Bank and other local enterprises. He organized the Auten Camburn Grain Elevator several years ago but recently sold out his interests to his son, Stanley N. Auten. He was also interested in a Grain Elevator at Cone.
