He was one of the oldest citizens of Sharpsburg, born in 1812, and his entire was passed in his native town.
He was one of the most estimable citizens in the community in which he lived and had established among his neighbors and friends an enviable reputation for uprightness of character.
He was during his active life always interested in the politics of his state and county, and was elected a county commissioner in 1855 and again in 1859. He was commissioned as a member of the Board of School Commissioners for Washington County to serve for four years from July 1865. It is believed that during the time he served as commissioner the present free school system was inaugurated in this county.
in 1846 he was commissioned by the late Gov Thomas G Pratt as a captain in the 10th Regiment of Maryland Milita. In his boyhood he carried mail between Sharpsburg, Hagerstown and Martinsburg on horseback, crossing the Potomac River at Williamsport and also from Sharpsburg to Burkittsville and Jefferson, Frederick County, making weekly trips.
He is survived by these children; Mrs Jacob McGraw, Miss Maria Theresa Kretzer, Mrs Charles W Adams all of Sharpsburg; Mrs J W Seiss, Baltimore and S P Kretzer, New York City.
Funeral services Wednesday afternoon at 2 pm at the late residence, conducted by Rev A A Kerlin, Pastor of Memorial Lutheran Church; interment Mountain View Cemetery.
Pallbearers; Henry W Schamel, Jacob Snyder, Jacob Lakins, Samuel Poffenberger, Wm Earley and Samuel S Stouffer.
