Calvin was a flight instructor for the Air Force teaching women how to fly in World War II. He was training two women when an engine fell off the airplane and crashed. Calvin died at Avenger Air Field, Sweetwater, Nolan County, Texas. There is a memorial at the air field in his memory.

Graduate of Bryson High School. He entered the Army Air Corps in 1941 and trained in California, Arizona and Texas. Atwood served as Flight instructor in Houston and Sweetwater.
