The film which was directed by Irving Rapper, which was written for the screen by Sonya Levien, Howard Koch, Harry Chandlee, Clifford Odets, Robert Rossen, and Elliott Paul, and which also starred Robert Alda, Joan Leslie, and Alexis Smith, tells the story of George Gershwin who is a driven composer whose need to succeed destroys his relationship with singer Julie Adams and socialite Christine Gilbert. He retired from acting shortly thereafter. He passed away following brain surgery at the Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, California, on January 1, 1950, at the age of 59. Following his death, his funeral service was held at the Fillbach Funeral Home Chapel in Burbank, California, and following the funeral service he was buried in Grand View Memorial Park and Crematory in Glendale, California. He was married twice, first to his partner and fellow performer Ruby Myers Patricola (1894-1920), in Silver Bow, Montana, from May 29, 1917, until her death on February 14, 1920, and secondly to Dorothy Daly Cully Patricola (1916-1981), in New York City, New York, from June 1, 1938, until his death on January 1, 1950.
