Leo J. Welch, 90, of Lake Wales, Fla., died Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009, at Brandywyne Health Care Center due to heart failure.
Born in Ottumwa, he was the son of John and Lola Fern Welch. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Welch, and his second wife, Val Welch.
Mr. Welch was a retired parts manager for Hawkeye Motor Co. in Burlington. He served in the Navy during World War II and the Korean War. He was a sailor who built radio stations from Maine to Aruba, and he was a Cryptologic expert. He had been a resident of the Lake Wales area since 1978, when he moved there from Burlington.
He was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church and a former member of the VFW, Eagles and Elks, all in Burlington. He was a avid fisherman and lifelong member of B.A.S.S. and was well acquainted with its founder, Ray Scott.
Survivors include one sister, Mary Merk of Blaine, Minn.
Besides his wives, he was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.
The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday with a prayer service at 11:30 a.m. with the Rev. Herb Schlenker officiating. Burial with military rites by Sumter County Honor Guard will be in the Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla.
