Franklin, (Frank) D. Burgess, gathered his bedroll, saddled up one last time and continued his journey to that distant ridge on January 30, 2010.
Frank was born on August 31,1942, to Ed Burgess and Mary McCray in Hot Springs S.D.
Growing up on horseback from a young age, he was raised by his Grandparents in the Pleasant Hills country east of Oelrichs S.D., and attended Pleasant Hills country school until one of his "high-jinks", it is believed to have involved a horse, an outhouse and an angry school teacher, landed him at Oelrichs school, where Frank completed what was left of his education.

In 1960, Frank married Ardith Wiese, made a home in Hot Springs, and together raised four children, all of whom remain close today.

Frank had an ethic of hard work, integrity and honesty, which he instilled in his children and those around him. He worked as a crusher loader operator, city water maintenance, county road maintenance and got out right in the nick of time ahead of the fire that gutted the old Evans Hotel, and then turned around and helped rebuild it. First and foremost however, Frank Burgess was a cowboy. Throughout his life, even if he wasn't working on a ranch somewhere, much of his spare time was spent gentling some rangy colt, either for his friend Duane or his cousin Wayne, or possibly for one his own kids.

Possibly the greatest comfort of Franks life came from spending time with his grandchildren. Hunting, fishing, camping and boating, he shared his passion for the outdoors with his family, a tradition we all pass to our children.

Having had the honor of sharing his life, Frank is survived by his wife of forty-nine years Ardith, his brother Everett (Donna) Burgess, his daughters Debra Harder and Marsha (Jeff) Simmons, of Hot Springs, son Kevin (Laura) Burgess of Mt. Vernon S.D., and Sandra (William) Maple, also of Hot Springs. Fortunate to have known their grandfather are nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Every kid who came through his door came to know Frank as grandpa. He will also be remembered by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, and many, many friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Larry and Neil, and two grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 pm on Monday February 1st, at McColley's Chapel of the Hils in Hot Springs.

Services will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday, February 2nd at McColley's Chapel of the Hills with Pastor Matt Lim officiating. Graveside services at Oelrichs cemetery following the church service.

A reception for sharing and fellowship will be announced.

A memorial has been established in Frank's name to benefit the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements have been placed in the care of McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Hot Springs. Written condolences can be made at www.mccolleyschapels.com
