Obituary from The Montana Standard 2/02/2010:

John E. Luckey, of Butte, died at his home following a brief illness.

He recently retired to Butte following careers in aviation and accounting.

John was born in Billings in 1944 to John D. and Winifred A. Luckey. After attending Billings High School he joined the Marine Corps and spent the majority of his active duty career as an Expeditionary Airfield Systems Technician (MOS 7011) with the Short Area for Tactical Support Expeditionary Airfield Program (SATS/EAF). He served three tours of combat duty in Vietnam and was a member of the team that made an amphibious landing, established and operated the key EAF field at Chu Lai, Vietnam, in 1965 with the 3rd Marine Expeditionary Brigade. His unit received the Presidential Unit Citation for their service at Chu Lai. Most of his Vietnam duty was at Chu Lai, however, he also had temporary assignments at the Marine Corps Air stations at Da Nang and Marble Mountain. He served in the Battle of Chu Lai and the Tet Offensive. His duty stations outside of Vietnam included Okinawa, Japan, El Toro and 29 Palms, Calif., Cherry Point, N.C., and Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. Following his Marine Corps service, John pursued a degree in accounting at San Francisco State University and, subsequently, obtained two advanced degrees at Montana State University. He practiced accounting at a number of firms in California and Montana. John also enjoyed the theater and literature.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Charles.

He is survived by his beloved daughter, Violet Meyers and grandson, Kainen of Billings; sister, Ruth; and brothers, James, William "Bud" and David; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. John's remains have been laid to rest in his family's plot in Laurel in a private family service.

Additional remembrances will be held in late May and shall include Marine military funeral honors. Inquiries on the May events may be made via e-mail to "[email protected]." In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation (commonly known as Toys for Tots) in John's honor: www.toysfortots.org.
