David Fogelsanger Daihl was born in Franklin County, the son of George & Sarah Ann (Barnhart) Daihl. In 1860, he was a farmer living in Southampton Township, Franklin County, and stood 5' 9" tall with dark hair and brown eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Chambersburg March 3, 1862, as a private with Co. A, 77th Pennsylvania Infantry, but was promoted to corporal August 1, 1863, and to sergeant November 1, 1864. Wounded at Nashville, Tenessee, December 16, 1864. Again promoted to 1st sergeant September 1, 1865, and to 1st lieutenant October 9, 1865. Honorably discharged with his company December 6, 1865, at Victoria, Texas.
After the war, he married Emma Catherine Slichter and fathered David Rupley (b. 08/04/81). (There may have been others.)
