A Pioneer Gone

Joshua Guffey, one of the very oldest settlers of Putnam county died
at his home seven miles southeast of town at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon at the advanced age of 90 years and 6 months. He was born at Amberland Gap, Tenn., March 4 th, 1811 and came to Missouri the fall of 1840, settling upon the farm that has since been his home and upon which he died. His wife died years since. He was the father of six children - three sons and three daughters - all of whom survive him except Mrs. Thos. Stockton. The sons are C.B. and William of this county and LeRoy who resides in south Dakota. The daughters are Mrs. David Shearer, now of south Missouri, and Mrs. James Carter, of Lancaster. All were at the funeral except LeRoy to whom word
could not be conveyed in time.
The funeral services were conducted by the Revs. Ben Beck and A.B.
Lipp, who were long time personal friends of the deceased, and a great
number of those who had known and respected Mr. Guffey for almost a
life-time were present to pay their last tribute of respect. The internment took place at the Carter grave yard.
