Annie Mae Mercer

May 08, 1921 - November 08, 2016

Annie Mae Welch Mercer, 95, of Waycross died Tuesday morning (Nov. 8, 2016) at Baptist Village after an extended illness. She was born in Telfair County, GA to the late Willie Hansford and Dora Towns Welch and lived in Waycross for most of her life. Mrs. Mercer graduated from Waresboro High School and played on the basketball team. She worked at Swisher Cigar Factory as a Supervisor and retired after thirty-five years of service to take care of her husband. Mrs. Mercer enjoyed travelling. She was a member of Kettle Creek Congregational Methodist Church where she sang in the choir and served on the Board of Stewards.

Ann Mercer, affectionately known as Mrs. Ann, joined the “Pink Ladies” at Memorial Hospital (later known as Satilla Regional Medical Center Auxiliary) in 1987. You could find Mrs. Ann in the hospital visiting patients while doing the juice cart, or delivering mail or flowers; helping people find their way in the hospital while manning the information desk or answering the phones; working in the gift shop unpacking merchandise and waiting on customers. She always lent a hand in accomplishing any task the Auxiliary had going on whether stuffing goody bags for the Children’s Christmas Party, working on the scrapbooks, sewing Christmas stocking for the nursery, helping out the fundraiser sales team raise money to purchase equipment for the hospital, or just calling fellow volunteers to see how they were doing. She served as President of the organization from 1992-1994 and then in 1996 until 1998; she also held several offices and served on various committees. She lovingly donated 26,635 hours to our community hospital (which is equivalent to working 40 hours a week for 13 years). During that time she received “The Mary O’Neal Award” for the most dedicated volunteer, “The Kathy Carbaugh Award” for the volunteer who has the most hours in one year (which she normally worked over a thousand hours in one year), and “The Volunteer of the Year”. Mrs. Ann retired from volunteering in October 2011.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbon Mercer; her step-mother, Mattie Mae Welch; two sisters, Lucille Gatlin and Linda Payne; one brother, Sonny Man Welch.

Survivors include three children, Lawanna Mercer-Cobb and her husband Bill of Augusta, GA, Jimmy Mercer and his wife Kathy of Woodstock, GA, Terry Michael Mercer of Nashville, TN; daughter-in-law, Sandra K. Ellis of Waycross; six grandchildren, Kristy Rowland and her husband Tony of Wilson, NC, Holly Singletary and her husband Daryle of Lebanon, TN, Terry Michael Mercer, Jr. of Waycross, Kelly Chumley and her husband Travis of Waleska, GA, Brandy Glasgow and her husband Nic of Waleska, GA, Brittany Arslanagic` and her husband Vedad of Atlanta; twelve great-grandchildren; one brother, Jesse Welch of Waycross; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

A funeral service will be held Friday afternoon at 2 pm at Kettle Creek Congregational Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Kettle Creek Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 – 8 pm at the funeral home.
