Civil War Union veteran; he was a brick maker in Delaware County when he enlisted at the age of 27. He was mustered in to the 19th Indiana Infantry, Company E "Delaware Grays" on July 29, 1861.

He was discharged during the winter of 1861-1862, when disease ravaged the regimental camp and rendered nearly 300 men unfit for duty.
