CLEMENS A. POELKER

Clement [sic] A. Poelker, hardware merchant, 1926 Benton street, St. Louis, MO., is a native of Holthausen, Hanover, Germany, and was born July 23, 1849. He came to America in 1868. He received his education in the parochial school in his native place and on leaving school worked on his father's farm for some time.

His parents were John G. and Emphabia M. (Stricker) Poelker, whose family consisted of six children. Neither of his parents ever left the old country, but his brother Henry, came to America after a stay of 12 years returned to Germany.

His sister, Therosa Poelker, likewise came to this country and was the the mother of the present Bishop of Belleville, Illinois, Right Reverend Henry Althoff. Clement [sic] Poelker was 19 years of age when he came to the United States; he went first to Aviston, Illinois, and afterwards to Jefferson City, Missouri, where he married Miss Maria Gels, November 1, 1876. After their marriage they moved to St. Louis, where Mr. Poelker took up his trade and worked at it with the St. Louis and New Orleans Anchor Line for 25 years.

In 1910 he engaged in the hardware business at his present location and has since conducted it with unvarying success. He is a member of the Catholic Knights of America, of which he served as trustee for 16 years. He is a past present of the Orphan's Society and a member of all the parish organizations.

Mrs. Poelker is a native of Jefferson City, Missouri and was born December 12, 1852. She was a daughter of John G. and Maria (Trnuel) Gels. She was the mother of seven children, all of whom were baptized in St. Liborius Parish. She died February 7, 1918.

Mr. and Mrs. Poelker's family consists of four sons and three daughters, who are: John G., born August 22, 1879, he married Miss Anna Bougner and is the father of six children; Louis G., born September 28, 1881, married to Miss Helen Obermeier and is the father of five; Marie C., born September 21, 1883, now Mrs. John Ammann, whose family includes eight children; Clement A., Jr. born October 8, 1996, married Miss Maria Ammann and has a family of four children; Henry A., born December 10, 1887; Clara M., born May 24, 1891, and Agnes J., born January 20, 1894.
