SUNRAY - Johnny Michael Goodwin, 62, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010, in Oklahoma.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Sunray Church of Christ with Jonathan Zerby, minister, officiating, and Jeff Goodwin, his brother, assisting. Burial will be in Lane Memorial Cemetery by Morrison Funeral Directors.

Johnny was born Jan. 5, 1948, in Amarillo to John H. and Nellie Goodwin. He was the first of five children and grew up farming and ranching in Sunray most of his life. Other pursuits in later life included tomato rancher, school crossing guard and the No. 1 animal control officer in the history of the city of Sunray. He also was a poet, a gentleman and a gentle man. Johnny had been a resident of Sunray all of life and was a member of the Sunray Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include three children, Bryan Goodwin and wife Janna of Canute, Okla., Amanda Stone and husband Sammy of Sunray and Meredith Thompson of Dumas; two sisters, Debbie Hill of Wilburton, Okla., and Melinda Rives of Kyle; two brothers, Jeff Goodwin of Fort Collins, Colo., and Jay Goodwin of Sunray; an uncle, J.A. Layton of Oroville, Calif.; an aunt, Billie Jean Hickman of Rockdale; seven grandchildren also have enriched Johnny's life; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family suggests memorials be to Amarillo Speech, Hearing, and Language Center, 1300 Wallace Blvd., Amarillo, TX 79106; or National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Panhandle Division, 6222 Canyon Drive, Amarillo, TX 79109.

The family will be at the family home north of Sunray.
