Ruben was born and raised in Richland, the son of Rudolpf and Anna Hodde Schmidt. He was the brother to Ella Matetzschk, Alma Wenzel, Lydia Schmidt, Eldom, Theodore and Adlai. He married (divorced) Bernice Kerlin Schmidt and their children were Betty Carol Glass, Ann Marie Hill, Patricia Sue Schmidt, Gary Lynn, Karen Kay Duecker, Janice Schmidt and Bonnie Gayle Hildenbrandt. Ruben served in WWII in the U.S. Army.
