Franz and Maria's first child was born and baptized in Falls County, Texas. By 1870 they had purchased land in the Hancock Survey at Richland where their four youngest children were born. For several years Franz drove an ox cart to Cameron to help operate a flour mill.
In 1877 Franz and Maria offered their home as a place for worship in the community. The following year they gave an acre of land on which a schoolhouse was built that was also used for worship services. Franz was the first president of the church council. In later years the Schmidt's moved to Pflugerville.
Franz was the first President of St. John Church and was a charter member.
