Magdalena was born in Schiers, Granbinden, Switzerland, the daughter of Othmar and Anna Barbara Belz Oertli. She was the sister to Jacob, Otmar, Johann Leonhard, Johann Heinrich and Margaretha Sauder. She came to New York at age 18 to live with her married sister in the Boston area. She married Peter Steger in 1870 and had three sons there, came to Richland in 1877 and had three more sons. Magdalena and Peter's children were Henry William, Willie Carl, John Leonard, Fred Adolf, Adolf William and Ernst Edward. Magdalena really missed the Swiss mountains.
