SHORT — Three Sequoyah County residents died when the house they lived in burned. Sarah McKenzie, 95, and her sons, J.W. McKenzie, 65, and Ned McKenzie, 54, died Saturday night, said Sequoyah County Sheriff Johnny Philpot. The McKenzies lived in the Short community, 12 miles north of Muldrow. "They appeared to be attempting to leave the house," Philpot said. "A passer-by pulled Sarah and J.W. out of the home through a window." The body of Ned McKenzie was found in a hallway of the home. "They all appeared to have died from smoke inhalation," Philpot said. A fire at the home was reported to Muldrow Police Department at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday. Shannon Rowland, of the Oklahoma State Fire Marshal's Office, said the fire apparently started in the kitchen and utility area of the home, but the cause is unknown. The two-story home was a total loss and damage is estimated at $40,000, Rowland said. "There doesn't appear to be any foul play involved," she said. Rowland said all of the bodies have been taken to the State Medical Examiner's Office for autopsies. Sarah McKenzie was the widow of Ector McKenzie and is survived by four daughters and two sons, 19 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. A service for Sarah, J.W. and Ned McKenzie will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Belfonte School Gymnasium with burial at Seabolt Cemetery, north of Muldrow. Times Record Online
