Benjamin John Van Buskirk was born October 30, 1815 in Virginia. He was the seventh of nine children born to John and Elizabeth WELSH Van Buskirk. Dutch was spoken in their home. Benjamin married Rebecca BAILEY in Henry County, Indiana in 1838. They had eight children. Benjamin was a member and licensed exhorter in the Methodist Episcopal church.

Benjamin was a descendant of Laurens Andriessen (i.e. Laurens son of Andries) and his wife Jannetje JANS Van Hoorn Van Buskirk. Jannetje was born in Utrecht, Noord-Holland. Laurens was born about 1625 in Holstein, a province of Denmark which later became part of Germany. Laurens came to New Amsterdam in 1654 or 1655. The first mention of Laurens in the records of New Amsterdam refers to him as "Laurens de Draijer" which is Dutch for "Laurens the Turner".
