Benjamin was a descendant of Laurens Andriessen (i.e. Laurens son of Andries) and his wife Jannetje JANS Van Hoorn Van Buskirk. Jannetje was born in Utrecht, Noord-Holland. Laurens was born about 1625 in Holstein, a province of Denmark which later became part of Germany. Laurens came to New Amsterdam in 1654 or 1655. The first mention of Laurens in the records of New Amsterdam refers to him as "Laurens de Draijer" which is Dutch for "Laurens the Turner".
