Birth Record revealed Dorothy V. Kidd was born on 12 October 1905 in Stanleyville, Fearing Twonship, Washington County, Ohio. Her parents were E. C. Kidd and Icy Elder.

Marriage Record revealed Mirrel S. Oliver was twenty-three and Dorothy V. Kidd was seventeen when they married on Christmas Day in 1922 by a First Methodist Church pastor in Marietta, Washington County, Ohio. Mirrel was born in Stanleyville, Ohio, was a Steel Mill worker and his parents were Charles C. Oliver and Anna Rohrer. Dorothy was born in Stanleyville, Ohio and her parents were Edwin C. Kidd and Ica Elder.

Dorothy took her baby sister, Marjorie, the eleventh child, home with her for several months so her mother could recuperate. She returned Majorie just prior to having her first child in September 1923.

They moved to Marietta in Washington County, Ohio where their next two daughters were born.

The 1930 census revealed Mirrel was an opener at the steel sheet mill and they owned a radio. They rented their home for $15 per month at Gertrude Place in Canton, Stark County, Ohio. They and their parents were all born in Ohio. Mirrel was twenty-three and Dorothy was seventeen when they married. Household members: Mirael S. Oliver (31), Dorothy V. (24), Myrtle I. (6), Dorothy M. (5) and Bernadine M. (2).

The next year Mirrel built a cabin on the Sandyville River close to East Sparta, Ohio. The three girls slept in the loft that had a door to let in fresh air.

The 1940 census revealed Mirrel was a Crain helper in a steel mill and earned $876 in 1939. They lived in Canton, Stark County, Ohio in 1935. Their daughter, Myrtle Oberlin and husband were living with them on Sherman Church Road in Bethleham, Stark County, Ohio and their real estate value was $1000. Mirrel had an eighth grade education and Dorothy had a ninth grade education. Household members: Mirrel S. Oliver (41), Dorothy V. (34), Dorothy A. (15), Bernadine M. (12), Donna J. (2), Donald L. She attended a welding class of one hundred-twenty hour and was hired at Taylor Craft in Alliance, Ohio where she worked as a welder some of the time during the war years.

Her daughters and grandchildren also lived with her. She took in boarders and helped raise the children so others could work.

Later they lived in the house in Lexington Township in Alliance in Stark County, Ohio which was bought by her daughter, Myrtle in 1944. Her grandchildren grew to call her, Mom and continued to do so throughout her life.

She divorced Mirrel shortly after the petition appeared in the Alliance Review on November 8, 1945 which stated that the reason was neglect and cruelty.

Marriage license revealed Dorothy Oliver was forty and resided in York, Rt. 1, S.C. and Sherman Hickman was thirty-six and resided in Alliance, Ohio. They were married on June 3, 1947 at 4:30 p.m. by a Judge of Probate in York County, South Carolina.

Dorothy's daughter, Myrtle, gave them her house contract for a wedding present. They lived in that house the rest of their lives.

They had one son:

Over the years, Dorothy worked as a maid in a Hotel in Akron and as a cook at various restaurants. She made their own lie soap and loved cooking and sewing. She was a peacemaker and often gave good advice to her children and grandchildren alike during their maturing years.

All of her adult life, she enjoyed coffee, cigarettes and growing flowers.

Her father, Edwin had lived with them for fifteen years before he died on 14 July, 1965.

They were married thirty-five years and enjoyed staying many summers on the Kidd farm in Marietta before Sherm died in 1982.

Dorothy suffered six months with failing health before her death.

Death Certificate revealed Dorothy V. Hickman was born on October 12, 1905 in Ohio. She was a homemaker, widow and resided at 11424 Aebi Avenue N.E., Alliance, Stark County, Ohio. Dorothy died at age eighty-two on January 14, 1988 in Timken Mercy Medical Center in Canton, Stark County, Ohio at 7:15 P.M. after a few days of Acute Thrombosis due to Coronary Artery Disease. Her parents were Edwin Clark Kidd and Ica Elder. Informant was her daughter, Dorothy Yost of 11500 Aebi Avenue, Alliance. Burial was in Marlboro Cemetery.

{{Dorothy V. Hickman, 82, 11424 Aebi Ave. N.E., died at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday at Timken Mercy Medical Center in Canton. She had been ill since May of 1987.

Mrs. Hickman was born Oct 12, 1905 in Stanleyville to Edwin Clark and Ica Elder Kidd, attended Marietta schools, and lived in Stark County most of her life.

Her husband, J. Sherman, died Oct 31, 1982.

She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Myrtle Oberlin of Cocoa, Fl., Mrs. Dorothy Yost and Mrs. Walter (Jean) Mozzochi, both of Alliance, and Mrs. Noah (Bernadine) Collins of Alvin, Tx; a son, James Sherman III, of Salem; five sisters, Mrs. Thelma Reed and Mrs. Edith Funk, both of Kissimmee, Fl, Mrs. Doris Young of Bedford, Mrs. Marjorie Fondon of Baytown, Texas, and Mrs. Eleanor Campbell of St. Marys, W.V.; three brothers, Delbert Kidd of Huntsville, Tx, Howard Kidd of Miami, Ok, and Chester Kidd of McConnelsville; and 18 grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.

Mrs. Hickman was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Ocra Burfield and Mrs. Opal Young; a brother, Harold Kidd; and 3 grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Cassaday Turkle Christian Funeral Home with Bishop Lewis Phelps of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints officiating. Burial will be in Marlboro Cemetery.
