He was a native of Mecklenburg County and son of the late Solomon Quincy and Elizabeth "Lizzie" McManus Barnes. He was the former owner-operator of Gastonia Textile Machinery. He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Lucy Mae Donnelly Barnes; a son, Charlie Barnes, Jr. of Salisbury; five daughters, Jackie Brown, Kay Barnes and Michele Dye of Gastonia, Carroll Sansing of Annapolis, Md., and Pat Eanes of Hope Mills; a brother, Johnny Barnes of Charlotte; 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Robert Summey at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Ward Funeral Home. Burial will be in Gaston Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 9:30 to 11 a.m. before the service.
