Ralph D. Countryman, 78, Topeka, died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001, at a Topeka retirement community.

Mr. Countryman served 40 years in the armed forces with both the Air Force and the Army National Guard before he retired.

He was born May 18, 1923, in Rossville, the son of Dewey and Florence Higgins Countryman. He attended Rossville High School.

He married Lorraine Kearney on April 17, 1953, in Topeka. She died in 1996. Mr. Countryman also was preceded in death by a daughter, Charlene Dean, earlier this year.

Survivors include a daughter, Darlene Bland, Topeka; three sisters, Vena Mae Thompson, Delia, Ruby Davis, Topeka, and Betty Barrett, Louisville, Ky.; one grandchild; and four great- grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 9:30 a.m. today at Mount Hope Cemetery.
