Melba J. Carriger, 83, Topeka, died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2001, at home.

She was born Aug. 22, 1918, in Shawnee County, to Harvey and Cecil Nettleton Bayless. She lived in Topeka for 51 years.

She married Lewis Carriger June 17, 1941, in Littleton, Colo. He died April 28, 1996.

Survivors include a son, Gary Carriger, Topeka; two daughters, Virginia Kingman and Margaret Cox, both in Topeka; four brothers, Harold Bayless and Calvin Bayless, both in Harveyville, Harvey Bayless, Carbondale, and Moine Bayless, Topeka; a sister, Wanda Marshall, Smith Center; seven grandchildren; and five great- grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Topeka Cemetery. Mrs. Carriger will lie in state after 3 p.m. today at Parker-Price Mortuary, where relatives and friends will meet from 7 to 8 p.m.
