Penelope Elizabeth Cooper Smith was the oldest child of three children and only daughter of James B. Cooper (1792-1846), a stone mason from Gloucester County, New Jersey, and Elizabeth "Betsy" Clement (1793-1857). She had two brothers: James Cooper, Jr. (1815-1855) and Thomas Cooper (1816-1892).

Penelope was the granddaughter of Commander James Britton Cooper (1761-1851) a Quaker who fought under Henry "Light Horse" Lee in the American Revolutionary War and who was in charge of gunboats off the New Jersey coast in the War of 1812.

Alden Smith married Penelope Elizabeth Cooper (1811-1885) of New Jersey in Niagra County, New York, in 1829. Subsequently, they were the parents of five sons and five daughters:
