Gilbert Daniels Known Rodeo Performer Killed
Services were held in Palisade Wednesday for Gilbert Chester Daniels who was killed on U.S. Hiway 160 near Mancus in Southwestern Colorado.
Daniels, a well known rodeo performer was born at Palisage on June 20, 1934. He spent his childhood at Oak Creek, attending grade and high school there, where he excelled in all sports, graduating with the class of 1952.
He resided in Oak Creek and Steamboat Springs areas for twenty years, then lived in Helper, Utah until about six years ago when he moved to Palisade where he operated Gib's Tree-Trimming Service and pursued his rodeo career.
Daniels was known as a colorful professional cowboy, being a member of the Rodeo Cowboys Association, specializing in riding saddle broncs and bareback, placing in the top rodeos in the country.
Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Elsianna Daniels of Palisade; five children, William Allen, Gary Grant and Deborah Dawn all of Palisade and Lynn Ray and Shane Lee, both of Denver; three brothers, Stanley of Leadville; Charles and Chris of Palisade; two sisters Barbara Joan Busio of Palisade and Emily Jane Thompson of Mack and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Chester Kissel of Palisade, with whom he lived as a child.
McLean Funeral Home in Palisade was in charge of the arrangements.
Pallbearers included Grant Bryan, Darwin Lockhart, Glen Mowery, Lloyd Hallquist, Courtney Fairbanks and Jim Hess and a large number of honorary pallbearers.
Daniels was riding in a car driven by Jack Edward Verner, son of Mrs. Angie Hunt. Another passenger in the car Nedra Kay Eblen, daughter of Mrs. Leonard Lighthizer was also killed. Verner was taken to Southwest Hospitial in Cotez for treatment of leg fractures and other injuries. His condition is not know at this time.
The group had been performing at a rodeo in Durango and were enroute home when the addicent occurred.
