Catherine was born June 15, 1907 in Joliet, Illinois. She was the daughter of George F. and Evelyn Cain Van Gorder, Jr. She married Gilbert W. Campbell on October 30, 1926 in Joliet, Illinois.
She attended school in Calumet Park and Blue Island, Illinois. Her father encouraged her to appreciate and love poetry. She collected and shared her poems with family and friends through out her life.
At age 14, she accepted Jesus as her Savior in a Methodist Episcopal Church, where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir.
When she was 19, she was introduced to the man of her dreams, Gilbert Campbell. He had a motorcycle with a sidecar when they met.
Gilbert swept her off her feet and 2 months later they were married with the blessing of her parents. The marriage continued until his death on February 13, 1981, after 54 years of a beautiful, happy and loving marriage.
On one of her first dates, she told Gilbert that if he wanted to take her out on Sunday, that he could take her to church. He agreed since they both believed in Jesus. They later joined the Church of the Nazarene, where they raised three children to love and accept Christ as their Savior.
Catherine became a Sunday school teacher, Vacation Bible School director and missionary president in Nazarene churches in Mt. Greenwood, Blue Island, Cottage Hills and Bloomington, as well as 1st Church of the Nazarene in Gary, Indiana.
She was the first person to receive the Distinguished Service Award from the Missionary Society at the Fairway Knolls Church of the Nazarene in Bloomington. She was awarded the Distinguished Long Life Award for her many dedicated years of Christian service to the Church of the Nazarene in the 1940's in Blue Island by her pastor on the occasion of her 95th birthday.
She faithfully read the Bible from cover to cover every year since 1969, and in 8 different versions during that time. She also served as a soloist and pianist for church services, and worked with her husband playing piano and leading music in missionary services.
She continued to sing until about the year 2000. She was a very loving and caring person and will be missed greatly by her family and the friends she made throughout her life's journey.
She was also fondly loved and respected by the residents and staff of Morris Health Care. Her light and life example will continue to shine brightly for those who knew and loved her.
