Emily Mell Berry Barnes, affectionately known to all as "Billie", of Ehrhardt, entered into eternal rest January 29, 2010, in Bamberg.

Mrs. Barnes was born November 13, 1929, in Colleton County and was a daughter of the late Marion Nathaniel Berry and Lola Fender Berry.

She attended Colleton County schools, graduated from Lodge High School in 1946 and graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Nursing in 1951.

During her school years, she served as Treasurer of her high school class for several years, was active in the Junior Homemakers Association (JHA) in high school, was active in the 4-H Club for 3 years, winning many local awards and a trip to the Atlantic Exposition in Richmond, Virginia as a member of a state award winning livestock judging team in 1946. She was active in the Meditrina Nursing Society while on campus at USC in 1946-1948.

Mrs. Barnes worked at Hampton General Hospital as a registered nurse and was the first In-Service Coordinator. She served her extended family and her community in a nursing role until her health began to fail in very recent years.

An active member of her community, she was a seventh-degree member of Ashton Grange #521 for over forty years and represented the local grange as a member of a unique Virginia Reel Dance Team at the National Convention in Raleigh, North Carolina in 1944. She served as Home Economic Chairman in the local grange for several years. She was Cub Scout Den mother for the first year of its organization in Ashton, and served on every Lodge High School class of 1946 Reunion planning committee from 1971 to 1991. She canvassed for American Heart Association and American Cancer Society at a time when door-to-door canvassing was their primary method of donor collections.

Mrs. Barnes was baptized and confirmed as member of Mount Pleasant Lutheran Church in Ehrhardt at an early age and moved her membership to Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church after her marriage. She was a member of Wesley Chapel Cemetery Association and Wesley Chapel United Methodist Women, serving as treasurer of the UMW for many years. She was the embodiment of an ecumenical spirit of compassion and service.

Surviving are: her husband of 59 years, John Holland Barnes of Ehrhardt; children, Marion Barnes and his wife Carmen Glenn Barnes of Ehrhardt and Robert Barnes of Ehrhardt; sister, Barbara Bessinger Sutton of Columbia; cousin, Claudia Fogle of Charlotte, North Carolina; and one grandson, Jacob Barnes of Ehrhardt.
